Anzai Mitsuyoshi ...
is a mature, genteel and cultured man of a stable temperament. Although he used to be an abrasive and bad-tempered coach, he had mellowed considerably. In 'Slam Dunk', he is able to tolerate nonsense very well. He only sort of flared up at Sakuragi Hanamichi once out of the countless times the latter embarrassed and/or disobeyed him.
Anzai is rightfully confident of himself and is mature enough not to be arrogant. As a coach, he recognises and treasures potential and is observant, sensitive and receptive. All these qualities make him a good and respectable coach. But besides being able to guide and bring out the potential of each individual and the entire team, he makes efforts to heighten their performance by going down to the personal level. To encourage them and boost their confidence. Actually his trust and faith in them is at times, a morale boost in themselves. This is what makes him an excellent coach.
As with many of the other stoic characters, Anzai is not very expressive. But although he usually just sits on the bench, looking like the colonel outside a certain fast food chain's (which sells mainly chicken) joints, the fire of his younger days has not altogether died. In fact, coaching Rukawa Kaede and Sakuragi Hanamichi has fanned the flames more alive.
